2006 Shape of the Nation l
California Department of
Education
Welcome
to the Department of Kinesiology at California State University,
San Bernardino. Within these pages you will find information
about our undergraduate and graduate programs, academic advising
including academic plans for graduation, teacher credential
programs, our student club, as well as information about our
faculty, staff and facilities. We offer educational experiences
for students interested in pursuing careers dedicated to the
study of human movement. Some of those careers include, but are
not limited to, teaching and coaching, adapted physical
education, exercise science, biomechanics, sport medicine,
pre-physical, and corporate fitness. With more than 300 majors,
the Department of Kinesiology is the second largest in the
College of Natural Science. Twelve
full time faculty and twenty-six part-time faculty
with diverse backgrounds in Kinesiology blend educational
practices with courses essential to the study of human movement.
As Kinesiology majors, students develop knowledge and practical
experiences that enable them to apply ideas and theories learned
in classrooms and laboratories to natural settings.
Many
of the educational experiences occur in the
Health Professions
(HP) Complex situated on the east side of our
park-like campus with the San Bernardino National Forest as a
backdrop. This spectacular facility includes more than
five thousand square feet of laboratories dedicated to the study
of Human Performance, Biomechanics, Motor Control, Psychology
and Sociology of Exercise and Sport, and Pedagogy.
Moreover, a large lecture hall, a beautiful dance studio, a
thirty-six hundred square foot physical activity center with
state-of-the-art equipment, combine with new classrooms to
support our academic program. Also, included is our beautiful
outdoor swimming pool, a 400-meter track, sand volleyball courts
and 12 tennis courts. We believe in the importance of a
quality education. To this end, we maintain relatively
small classes taught by tenure track faculty and have required
quarterly academic advisement for our students.
The Department of Kinesiology provides educational
opportunities, research experiences, and uses professional
contacts to help our students start their own businesses, secure
gainful employment in various public and private sectors, and
admission to graduate study. Those opportunities and contacts
are the lifeblood of our program. For example, there are various
teaching opportunities for CSUSB graduates, with the demand for
adapted physical educators exceeding the supply. A number of
CSUSB graduates entered successful careers in private industry
in allied health related fields. The past few years have
been a time of tremendous growth for our department. The
expansion of our research, teaching, and public engagement
activities is enabling our department to achieve new levels of
success. Our recent scholarly and instructional successes
have accentuated the need for new equipment for teaching and
research.
The College of Natural Sciences
and campus community responded by purchasing equipment for our
various laboratories. The addition of high quality equipment
will certainly benefit our teaching and scholarly initiatives,
but more important, it will also allow us to better
accommodate the needs of our student. For example, in
recent years many of our CSUSB graduates have assisted the
faculty with research projects and have continued advanced study
Kinesiology, Physical Therapy, Pharmacology, and other health
related disciplines. As you probably surmised, our programs
prepare students for various professional career pathways.
It¡¯s an exciting time in our department as we continue to grow
stronger, both in numbers of students and in the range of
teaching research and service we offer. Visit our web site to
learn more about the exciting opportunities in our department.
Sincerely,
Terry L. Rizzo,
Ph.D.
